What happens during a Starlink installation?

A professional Starlink installation is more than attaching a dish to a wall. The engineer needs to find a safe, suitable position with a clear view of the sky, agree a cable route into the building, connect the router and check that the system is working before leaving. Here is how a typical Satworks residential appointment works.

1. Assess the property and the sky view

The engineer will discuss where you want the router and examine possible positions for the Starlink equipment. Trees, neighbouring buildings and parts of your own roof can interrupt the view of satellites moving overhead. The Starlink app’s obstruction tool helps assess candidate locations. The chosen position must also be safe to reach and suitable for the proposed fixing; the highest point on a building is not automatically the right place.

2. Agree the mounting position and cable route

For a standard job, the engineer will use a suitable official mount or, where the official mount is unsuitable, a standard third-party bracket or pole that can be fitted safely within reach. The engineer will agree a practical route for one cable from the dish to the nearest suitable entry point. An ordinary wall penetration is checked for hidden services, then secured and sealed. Where required by the agreed standard route, a cable run of up to 45 metres is included in Satworks’ standard scope.

If the best position needs scaffold, powered access, a new concreted ground pole, specialist roof work or a bespoke structure, the engineer will explain the additional work and any quote needed before proceeding. Safety always takes priority.

3. Connect and set up the router

The router is normally placed by the nearest suitable fixed power supply to the cable entry point. The engineer connects the equipment, helps activate it using your Starlink account, sets a Wi-Fi name and password, and checks the connection. You should have access to your account and the Starlink app during the visit.

The engineer will show you the basic app view, explain any alerts and confirm what was completed. They will tidy the work area and ask you to sign off the job. Some app statistics take time to build after first activation, so a short test at handover cannot predict every future condition.

What is outside a standard visit?

Extra runs to other rooms, multiple wall openings, substantial cable containment, electrical repairs, third-party devices and whole-home mesh Wi-Fi are separate work. A standard installation gets the Starlink system operating at the agreed router position; it does not guarantee strong wireless coverage in every room. Loft routing is considered only if the loft is boarded, lit, inspected and approved as safe.
